“Surcouf” (NN 3) is a French submarine, whose design was called sous-marin de bombardement, meaning "submarine bombardment ship" or "submarine artillery ship". Launched on October 18, 1929. Joined the fleet in May 1934. The ship is named after the famous privateer Robert Surcouf and was the world's largest submarine, until the Japanese submarine “I-400” was built. It was intended for cruising operations in the ocean lines of communication and, in addition to the torpedo armament (combat torpedo stock - 22), which was common for submarines, was armed with two 203 mm caliber guns, and had a seaplane for reconnaissance and artillery fire adjustment. Displacement was 2,880 tons above water and 4,330 tons underwater. Length - 110 m, sailing range - 12,000 nautical miles. This ship was the pinnacle of post-World War I attempt to combine the stealth of a submarine with the firepower of a surface ship. Another feature of the “Surcouf”, with which he surprised the world, was the ability to fire the main caliber cannons from a semi-submerged position. Sunk for unknown reasons, probably on February 18, 1942.
Well designed, richly detailed for a model of this size, but not too complex, and under the supervision of a more experienced colleague, it can be perfectly assembled by a modeler with little experience.
