As German U-boat crews celebrated their victories in the first months of World War I, the British Admiralty decided to build a series of new and unusual submarines for the Royal Navy. The large ships of the M. I series were armed with powerful weapons for those times. In the construction of "M" series ships, all the experience, gained in the construction of "K" class ships, was used. Steam engines were abandoned in these ships and diesel engines were installed. The ships were built at the “Vickers and Armstrong-Whitworth” shipyards. A total of 4 "M" class ships were built, but one is unfinished. The main armament consisted of a 305 mm cannon, mounted in front of the control cabin (the same cannons mounted on British battleships of the time). It could be turned in a very narrow sector from the axial line - the angle of movement was only 7 degrees. In addition to this weapon, the ships were also armed with 4 torpedo tubes in the front. A single 76 mm gun was mounted at the rear, which was retracted into the hull when the ship dived. The keel of the first ship was laid in June 1917, and a year later it was put into service. The previously carried out tests of attachment and artillery armament were successful and the ship was recognized as a successful purchase of the fleet. But it entered service at the end of the war and was practically never tested in combat conditions. The first months of service "М. I" sailed in the Mediterranean and Black seas. In 1920 the ship returned to Britain and served until November 1925. During training, the Swedish merchant ship "Vidar" and "M. I" sank with the entire crew of 69 sailors.
A well-designed submarine model of medium difficulty, painted in colorful camouflage, which even a modeler with little experience can assemble perfectly under the supervision of a more experienced colleague.
