The osprey, also called the fisher, the fish hawk (Pandion haliaetus) is the only species of the osprey genus (Pandion) of the order Falconiformes, the monotypic family of the ospreys (Pandionidae). It is classified as a bird of prey. The Latin name of the species is derived from the Greek words: "halos" - sea and "aetus", meaning eagle. Ospreys live on all continents, except Antarctica, and are rare in Europe. Although it has been spreading in Lithuania in recent decades, it is not common and is listed in category 2 (V) of the Lithuanian Red Book. You will rarely meet this bird far from larger bodies of water, seas, lakes, rivers. It is like places, where the water is clear, unpolluted and there are plenty of medium-sized fish near the surface of the water. It is a fairly large bird; its size is between a white-tailed eagle and a buzzard. Body 50–66 cm, spread wings of the male 127–166 cm, females – 144–180 cm. Body mass of the male 1120–1600 g, and females – 1600–2050 g. When watching it fly, its white or slightly mottled lower part of the body is visible. The beak is black, the claws look powerful, large, black. The legs are long.
