In 1939 the British Department of Defense issued a specification for a light military truck. Based on this document, a truck was built in Canada marked "15 CWT", which meant a carrying capacity of 15 centners (about 750 kg). This project was accepted by the British War Office and it was directed to serial production. Despite the fact that traffic in Canada drives on the right side of the road, these cars were made for Great Britain and adapted to drive on the left side of the road. Chewrolet and Ford factories produced more than 815 thousand of these trucks. Most of these cars were used in the war in Africa, where they often became the prey of the Africa Corps.
