Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea)

The Eurasian Nuthatch or traditional synonym is Sitta europaea – a species of bird in the Passeriformes order, the Sittidae family. The subspecies Sitta europaea europaea lives in Lithuania. It is common in the country, found throughout the country, and observed throughout the year. It is believed that up to 50,000 pairs of Nuthatch breed in the country. A bird the size of a house sparrow (Passer domesticus), from a distance it may resemble the silhouette of a woodpecker climbing a tree trunk. Body length 12–14.5 cm, weight 17–28 g, spread wingspan 22–27 cm. Light bluish-gray upper body feathers and a black stripe running along the head through the eye. Wings and tail blackish-brown. The lower part of the body and throat of the subspecies Sitta europaea europaea are white, the lower part of the subspecies Sitta europaea caesia is light brownish yellow, the throat is white, the lower part and throat of the subspecies Sitta europaea sinensis are light brownish yellow. The beak is straight, gray. The legs are strong, brownish, with large, curved claws adapted to climbing tree trunks. The tail is short. There are no significant differences in appearance between males and females.
