At the end of 1916, construction work began on a new fighter at the “Sopwith” plant, which was very reminiscent of its predecessor, the Sopwith “Pup”. The main difference was the reinforced armament, which consisted of two “Vickers”-type machine guns, mounted on the top of the fuselage and partially hidden under the covers, which gave the aircraft its characteristic slightly humped appearance. Hence the name of the new fighter – “Camel”. Very soon Sopwith “Camel” became the main RAF fighter in Britain, although the opinions of the pilots, flying them, were very controversial. By the end of the war, about 5,500 aircraft of this type had been built, and the pilots, who had flown them, had shot down more than 2,500 enemy planes by the end of the war. In the Sopwith "Camel" version of the "Comic" Nightfighter, the cockpit was moved towards the tail and the "Vickers" machine guns, mounted in the fuselage, were replaced by "Lewis" machine guns of the same caliber, mounted on the upper wing with Foster mounts. These "Camel"s were intended for defense against "Zeppelin" airship raids and served in the Home Defense Squadron.
An uncomplicated, well-designed and well-detailed model of a colorful airplane for a modeller of any experience. Only for beginners and advanced beginners, we recommend gluing this model under the supervision of a more experienced colleague. The model features excellently detailed cockpit equipment, engine, armament, chassis and exterior detailing. There is a small stock of colors, the graphic instruction is small, but quite detailed, the textual one is small and only additional general notes.
