Without a bow, the crossbow is probably one of the oldest projectile weapons, invented by mankind. Over time, crossbows became a truly dangerous weapon - so dangerous that in 1339 Pope Innocent II banned their use by Christians, but no one ever complied with that ban. Over time, larger crossbows on permanent stands were mounted on the walls of castles and thus became even more dangerous.
A small and not very complicated model of such a crossbow, and you can make it from this publication. It won’t cause much trouble, just that - the details are very small.
