St. Mary's Basilica in Gdansk, also known as the Co-Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the Main Parish Church of the City (Polish: Farą Głównego Miasta), has been a minor basilica since 1965. The history of this religious building dates back to the period of feudal fragmentation in Poland and is unclear, since it is believed, that the first mention of the church, that stood on the site of the current basilica, appears in sources in the middle of the 13th century. However, the origins of the current basilica are clear – building began in 1343, based on a privilege, issued by the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Interestingly, building began simultaneously on both sides – the eastern and western. By 1400, the outer walls were completed, and the work was supervised by the master mason Henryk Ungeradin – the same man, who worked on the Gdańsk Town Hall. Work continued during the Thirteen Years' War (1454–1466), and the final version of the vaults in the church, probably, appeared in 1498–1502. In 1518, a Renaissance-style Parish Church was added to the church. During World War II, the church was largely destroyed, and its current appearance was achieved after 40–50es of XXth century after conservation work. The basilica was reconsecrated in 1955. It is currently one of the largest churches in Poland and a fine example of Northern European Gothic architecture.
