The prototype of the Il-2 appeared in early 1939 and was designated CKB-55 (two-seater), and later - CKB-57 (single-seater). The aircraft was intended for the destruction of fortifications and combat vehicles on the battlefield. Flight tests lasted from October 1940 to March 1941, after which the aircraft was sent for serial production as the Il-2. Ilyushin initially pressed for the production of a two-seat version, but party and government representatives decided, that a single-seat version would be produced, but heavy losses of attack aircraft in collisions with enemy fighters forced a return to the production of a two-seat version. The single-seat version was produced until mid-1942, later a two-seat version of several modifications was produced. In total, over 36 thousand Il-2 aircraft of all versions were produced, and it became one of the most widely used aircraft of that period.
