The project, originally called XS (Experimental Supersonic), was carried out by NACA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which later became NASA) and the US Air Force (later USAF). The technical implementation of the program was entrusted to “Bell Aircraft Corporation”. Highly classified work began in 1946. The main goal of the program was the creation of new aviation structures and technologies, which had a significant impact on the further development of US military aviation and later space programs. The X-1, also known as the S-1, was one of the early stages of the program. The aircraft was powered by a rocket engine, that could only be started at a certain altitude, to which it was lifted by a specially equipped B-29. The cockpit was hermitized. The aircraft was equipped with retractable landing gear. After a flight with the engine running, the X-1 returned to the airfield in a gliding flight. On October 17, 1947, during the 31st flight, pilot Chuck Jaeger exceeded the speed of sound for the first time in aviation history, reaching Mach 1.06. The aircraft was named "Glamorous Glennis" in honor of Jaeger's wife. Subsequent flights with improved "X" series aircraft allowed them to achieve even higher speeds.
A small and well-designed and richly detailed model of a small experimental aircraft is quite complex, although it does not seem so. But we can recommend it to modelers of any experience. Only for beginners and modelers with little experience we recommend working under the supervision of a more experienced colleague. Of course, the model will not forgive haste or carelessness. The model has a perfectly recreated fuselage, all visible exterior detailing, cockpit equipment, chassis and its niches, visible engine details, and it is possible to make opening cabin exit hatches. Control plates are given only as separate from the main plates. Color reserves - only stripes in the middle of the sheets. The textual instruction in Polish is small and only covers the gluing of some nodes in general terms, the graphical instruction is very extensive, consistently arranged, informative and easy to read. After gluing, it is recommended to spray the model with glossy varnish.
