The Merlin (Falco columbarius) is a bird of prey of the Falconidae family. It is the smallest of the falcon species, found in Lithuania. It is quite short, stocky, and has relatively short wings. The male is easiest to distinguish from all smaller falcons by the dark stripe at the end of the tail. The female differs from the female kestrel by the dark brown upper side of the body and a shorter tail. The male's upper body is bluish-gray with longitudinal stripes. The forehead and cheeks are whitish; the nape is bright brown with longitudinal stripes. The flight feathers are black, with white transverse spots on the inner fans. The tail is striped, with a dark stripe at the end with a light edge. The underside of the body is whitish, on the chest and belly - elongated black spots. The beak is bluish, waxy yellow. The legs are also yellow; the claws are black. The iris of the eyes is brown. The upper body of the female is brownish with light gray spots. The nape is light brown; the forehead is whitish. The lower body is brownish-white, longitudinally spotted. The young are similar to the female; their upper body is browner. The downy coat is short, yellowish, later it lengthens, the upper side becomes brownish-gray, the lower side is light gray. In Eurasia, it is distributed from Scandinavia to the Bering and Okhotsk Seas. In the north, the range reaches the Kola and Yamal peninsulas, the lower Ob, the Yenisei and Lena estuaries, the middle Kolyma, the Anadyr basin. In the south, it is distributed to the lower Amur, Transbaikalia, Tian Shan, central Kazakhstan, Ryazan, Moscow regions, Lithuania.

It lives in North America, the British Isles, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Shantar, Sakhalin. Its winters in China, the Middle East, Western and Southern Europe. The peregrine falcon is rarely seen in Lithuania, sometimes it breeds here. The species is listed in the Lithuanian Red Book.
