Notre-Dame de Paris (French: Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris) is a cathedral in Paris, on the island of the Seine-Cité; one of the most significant monuments of early Gothic architecture. It is the oldest cathedral in northern France. The Cathedral was built during the period of the establishment of Paris as the capital of France and its cultural center. Notre-Dame de Paris was built on the site of an old basilica, which, like many other monuments of Christianity, was built on the site of a Gallo-Roman temple. After the establishment of the Diocese of Paris, Bishop Maurice de Sully began the building of the city's Cathedral in 1163. Building lasted almost 200 years (the Cathedral was completed in 1345). The main building materials are stone and wood. The length of the cathedral is 130 m, width is 48 m, the height of the vaults is 35 m, the spire of the tower is 90 m. It can accommodate about 9 thousand worshipers at a time. Inside the five nave Cathedral there are 29 chapels, which contain a number of works of art from the 17th–18th centuries. In the transept nave there are stained glass windows with a diameter of 13 m. The rosette on the north side has survived from the 13th century. The figure of the Mother of God in the center is surrounded by characters from the Old Testament. The south rosette, which depicts Christ surrounded by angels and saints, was restored in the 18th century. The author of the Pieta on the central altar is the French sculptor N. Cousteau (1658–1733). The carved wooden cloisters are a gift to the Cathedral from Louis XIII. The cathedral treasury contains liturgical vessels, vestments, and relics (the Crown of Thorns, a fragment of the Holy Cross, a nail). The Cathedral is visited by about 15 million tourists every year. Previously, before the fire on April 15, 2019, it was possible to take part in a free tour of the church on different days of the week, where services were held in various languages. In 2019 On April 15, 1915, the cathedral was destroyed by a fire. It is now restored and open to tourists.
