Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dryobates minor)

The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dryobates minor) is a bird of the Picidae family. It is the smallest of the woodpeckers, about the size of a house sparrow. The male has a white forehead and a red crown. The back is white, with a black transverse pattern. The wings are black, marked with transverse white stripes. The flight feathers, except for the two black middle ones, are white, the transverse stripes are black. The cheeks are white, with a black stripe running from the corner of the mouth. The underside of the body is whitish, sometimes with longitudinal spots. The beak is black. The legs are gray. The iris is blackish-brown. The female is similar to the male, only the crown is black. The colors of the young are blurred, matte. Their forehead is darker than the underside of the body, the longitudinal stripes are wider. They hatch bald. In Eurasia, it is distributed from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. In the north, the range reaches the Kola Peninsula, the lower reaches of the Pechora, Ob, Yenisei, the middle reaches of the Lena, the Sea of Okhotsk, in the south it extends to the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, Mongolia, northern Kazakhstan, the Volga Delta, Asia Minor, the Mediterranean coast. Isolated parts of the range are found in the Caucasus, northern Iran, Kamchatka and the Anadyr basin, North Africa. In Lithuania, it is common.
