„Pallada“ – the Russian I Rank armored cruiser

Cruisers "Pallada", "Diana" and "Aurora" are named after ancient Greek goddesses and inherited their names from sailing frigates, that distinguished themselves in the development and protection of the Far Eastern borders of the Russian Empire in the 19th century in the first half. They were built as "merchant destroyers", that were halved in size and armament, compared to the "Riurik" series of armored cruisers. In March 1895, the project of an armored cruiser for the Pacific Ocean was started and it was decided to build three cruisers of the same type in the St. Petersburg shipyards. Construction of the two cruisers "Pallada" and "Diana" was started immediately in "Galernyj Ostrov" shipyard, and in September construction of the third cruiser began, which was launched in 1897. March 31, was named "Aurora". In 1902 October - 1903 in April, the cruisers "Pallada" and "Diana" together with the battleship "Retvizan" were transferred to the Far East, where they became part of the Pacific Escadre. The cruiser "Pallada" took part in the Russo-Japanese War. in 1904 January 27 (8 February) was torpedoed by a Japanese destroyer on the outer raid of Port Arthur; In April 1904, after repairs, it returned to service. Participated in the Battle of the Yellow Sea, after which he returned to Port Arthur with the main part of the escadre. In 1904 November 25 the cruiser was sunk by 280 mm Japanese siege artillery shells during a raid in the inner port of Port Arthur. In 1905 "Pallada" was raised by the Japanese in September, after repairs and refit at Sasebo, she entered the Imperial Japanese Navy and was named "Tsugaru". In 1920, it was converted into a mine barrier. Removed from the lists in 1922.
