"Kamchatka" – The Tsarist Russian transport ship - workshop

The emergence of the future transport "Kamchatka" - a solution to the issue of supplying ships with coal at sea. On January 7, 1900, a decree was issued on the instruction to build a coal transport for the port of St. Petersburg, for the building of which a wooden sloop of the New Admiralty shipyard was allocated. Work there began on April 10, 1901, and on April 16, out of the four proposed names - "Baikal", "Okhotsk", "Ayan" and "Kamchatka" - Tsar Nicholas II chose the last one, under which the ship was included in the fleet lists on April 21. On October 19, 1902, the hull was launched. But the Russo-Japanese War influenced the purpose of "Kamchatka" - the coal transport was converted into a "squadron workshop". The ship sailed for the first time for official trials on August 27, 1904. After eliminating the malfunctions and correcting the errors, after further trials, the ship was transferred to the port of Revel (now Tallinn), where she participated in the Supreme Fleet Review on September 26, 1904, and after a short stop in Libava on October 2, he left the shores of Russia forever. During the Russian squadron's campaign to the Far East, the crew of the “Kamchatka” provided technical assistance to the ships. In the Battle of Tsushima on May 14, 1905, at about 4 p.m., the “Kamchatka” was severely damaged and at 7:30 p.m. it sank. On September 2 of the same year, by order of the Naval Board No. 176, the “Kamchatka” was removed from the fleet lists.
