At the end of the 19th century the Kingdom of the Netherlands faced a major problem with the modernization of its naval forces. At that time the Dutch fleet consisted of several armored ramming ships, the design of which was modeled on the monitors of the American Civil War. Unarmored cruisers with full sailing equipment served in the colonies. With the help of their German colleagues, Dutch constructors in the late 1880s a project for new coast defense battleships was prepared. The new ships were to be armed with the latest and most powerful artillery, available to the Dutch navy at that time, and they were to have sides of such a height, that they could safely sail in the ocean. A characteristic feature of the new Dutch battleships was the addition of a metal bulwark, which was to improve seaworthiness and protect the deck from flooding by waves. The projecting works on the new ships was completed in 1893, and a year later the keels of three ships - "Piet Hein", "Kortenaer" and "Evertsen" - were laid. The official launching ceremony of "Evertsen" took place on September 29, 1894, in the presence of numerous guests, including representatives of the royal family. The battleship entered service 2 years later. Like all of its contemporaries, the ship served for 20 years, during which training and maneuvers were conducted. But it was never used for its main purpose. The technical solutions, which were used during the building of these ships and the rapid development of technology led to the fact, that in 1912 the “Evertsen” was transferred to the reserve, and on January 1, 1913 it was removed from the fleet lists and quickly sold for scrap.
A small, moderately designed and quite richly detailed model for medium-experienced and experienced modelers. But, working under the supervision of a more experienced colleague, this model should be assembled by an advanced beginner and a modeler with little experience. There will be no room for haste here. Textual instructions, one might say, are completely absent - only a dozen general notes, the graphical instruction is not too large, but quite clear, comprehensive, detailed and easy to read.
