ORP "Jaskolka" – the Polish trawler

ORP "Jaskolka" - one of a series of six mine trawling and laying ships, popularly called "birds". They were the only naval warships, built in Poland from design to completion before World War II. The Navy Shipyard in Gdynia launched "Jaskolka" in 1934. The "birds" unit met the beginning of the war in the port of Hel, but was soon transferred to Jastarnia. On September 7, 1939 the crew of the "Jaskolka" shot down an attacking bomber Ju-87 during a patrol. On September 12-15, the "Jaskolka", "Czajka" and "Rybytwa", which were still able to fight, supported the defenders of Oksywie with fire, giving them the opportunity to counterattack. The same three ships laid 60 mine barriers in the port of Gdansk on the night of September 12-13. On September 15, German aviation carried out two heavy raids on the port of Jastarnia and attacked ships standing "at anchor". "Jaskolka", hit by a bomb, sinks, the other two ships are severely damaged.
