Little owl (Athene noctua)

The little owl (Athene noctua) is a bird of the owl family (Strigidae). The little owl is one of the smallest owls, similar to the barn owl. It differs from it in longitudinal spots on the head, less feathered legs and an interrupted cheek crown. The back of the male and female is grayish-brown, the head with longitudinal light spots, the shoulders are dotted with round white spots. The flight feathers and flight feathers are brown with a whitish transverse pattern. The belly is white with a brown longitudinal pattern. The head is small, the cheek disc is discontinuous, merging with the neck feathers at the bottom, and the beak is whitish. The legs are covered with sparse feathers, and the toes are only bristled. The beak is yellowish, the claws are black, the iris is yellow. The chicks hatch covered with dense short white down. In Eurasia, it is distributed from the Atlantic Ocean to northeastern China and the Korean Peninsula. In the north, the range reaches Denmark, Latvia, the middle Volga, the southern Urals, northern Kazakhstan, Altai, Transbaikalia, northeastern Mongolia. In the south, the range extends to central China, Tibet, northeastern Pakistan, the northern coasts of the Arabian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. It lives in northern and eastern Africa. This is a rare species of owl in Lithuania, which migrated here in the middle of the 20th century. It no longer breeds. The species is listed in the Lithuanian Red Book.
